SERVPRO’s How to for Fire Damage in Morris Plains

Thousands of structural burns, both severe and minor, take place in the Morris Plains area each year. Once an inferno ignites, the fire damage that gets caused can include soot residues left behind by the smoke. Since heat rises, smoke can quickly go straight to your ceilings and then to other rooms of your house. Once these partially burnt particles contact cooler surfaces such as your ceiling, they can solidify and turn into soot residues.

Our SERVPRO technicians know that when working on fire damage restoration in Morris Plains, cleaning ceilings can become a large portion of the mitigation procedures. Some ceilings are composed of non-porous materials such as wood, whereas others could be more porous substances like drywall or acoustic tiles. Since your various ceilings could require different techniques to clean soot residues, we start by test cleaning your affected areas. For the most part, non-porous ceilings can be cleaned using water-based detergents, but your affected drywall can be cleaned better using dry techniques.

After our SERVPRO crew test cleans your affected walls and ceilings, we can determine whether wet cleaning or other methods like using dry sponges would be best. However, before we begin cleaning your ceiling, we first move all of your furniture away from your walls and cover it with thick plastic to prevent any soot falling on your unaffected contents. Next, we remove any art or other items that are hanging on your walls. Then we use a vacuum with a HEPA filter to suck up any excess, dry soot, or soils.

Once the room containing your affected ceiling is prepared, we start by cleaning the rear corner of the room. We apply the sponge to the surface so that pressure is distributed evenly. We then drag the sponge about three to four feet in one pass. Next, we reposition the sponge so that it overlaps the first pass and cleans an area about four to five feet across.
